Chapter Summary

1.  In Ecclesiates, Solomon, late in life, makes his commentary on life "under the sun" or "under heaven" -- By this he means "of the world" or in today's terms, "secular" -- Toil is wearisome -- everything is an endless cycle -- even worldly wisdom is meaningless
2.  Pleasure is also meaningless under heaven -- Under the sun, accomplishing great things is meaningless -- Secular wisdom, and folly are both meaningless, though that wisdom is better than folly -- The results of all our toil will be left for another when we die -- The best we can receive in the long run is to eat, drink and have satisfaction in our work
3.  Solomon tells us that there is a time for everything, a season for everything under the sun -- God makes everything beautiful in its time -- God has placed a yearning for heaven in the hearts of men-- What God does will last forever -- worldly justice and judgment is really not just and right, for wickedness is also there
4.  Under the sun there is oppression, injustice, a futility in labor, a seemingly unending cycle of struggle and strife -- Even advancement brings its own sense of futility
5. Solomon urges us to stand in awe of God, to guard our steps and make our words few to avoid being foolish -- When we make a vow, we should be careful to fulfill it -- The lover of money never has enough and is never satisfied with what he does have -- All our labor for riches ultimately comes to nothing, for we take nothing with us when we die -- Solomon repeats a recurring thought, "I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life that God has given him - for this is his lot."
6.  One who has riches, honor and everything his heart desires does not bring enjoyment
7.  This chapter contains many proverbs and sayings; Solomon tells us to consider what God has done -- He lists several situations to consider -- He concludes the chapter by stating that God made mankind upright, but men have gone in search of many schemes.
8.  Those who are wise will obey their leaders;  there is a proper time and procedure to bring changes -- Solomon relates several comparisons between the righteous and the wicked -- He points out that though it seems things often go well for the wicked while here on earth, still it will go better for the God-fearing  people who are reverent before God -- Life "under the sun" (life here on earth) often seems meaningless to our eyes
9.  There is a common earthly destiny to all - righteous or wicked;  we all physically die -- In the end, wisdom is better than folly
10.  Through pithy sayings and comparisons of wise and wicked actions, Solomon continues to comment on life under the sun as being meaningless.
11.  Solomon points out that what we continually give out, we will eventually reap a reward from -- He concludes this chapter with the advice to "Remember your Creator while you are young."
12.  Solomon goes on to say in this final chapter of Ecclesiastes that we should remember our Creator in the days of our youth, for we do not know when our end will come -- He urges us to do so because after our death we can not change our eternal destiny -- He closes the book with the conclusion from his searching about the meaning of life - "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.  For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil."
