2 Kings

Chapter Summary


1.  The Lord's judgment on Ahaziah -- Elijah sent by God to deliver the judgment -- Ahaziah dies -- Ahaziah had no son to succeed him, so Joram became king of Israel
2.  Elijah and Elisha travel together, knowing that Elijah would soon be taken away by the Lord -- Elijah urges Elisha to let him go on alone at Bethel, at Jericho and at the Jordan river -- Elisha insists on staying with Elijah and asks that he be given a double portion of Elijah's spirit -- Elijah agrees that if Elisha sees him go, his request will be granted -- Elisha sees Elijah swept away in a whirlwind by a fierychariot and horses of fire -- Elijah's cloak falls to Elisha -- Elisha returns to Jericho -- Healing of the water -- Elisha is jeered
3.  Joram, son of Ahab, reigns 12 years -- Moab refuses to supply Joram with the lambs, rams and wool required of him -- Joram, with the aid of Jehosaphat, king of Judah, and the king of Edom march to attack Moab but run out of water on the way -- Elisha is consulted and prophesies that ditches filled with water will appear -- The Moabites are nearly overcome, but finally repel the invasion of Joram and his allies
3.  A widow came to Elisha for help to keep her sons from being sold into slavery -- Elisha tells her to collect many jars and fill them with oil from the little jar of oil, which was the only thing she had -- all the jars were filled so she sold the oil, paid her creditors and had money left to live on -- A Shunammite couple befriends Elisha -- Elisha predicts that they will have a son -- The child dies and the mother puts him on Elisha's bed and goes to find Elisha -- Elisha sends his servant to lay his staff on the boy, while the mother and Elisha go back to the house -- Elisha prays for the boy and his is raised from the dead -- Feeding of the hundred men
4.  Naaman. the commander of the army of the king of Aram, is healed of leprosy when he follows the instructions given by Elisha through his servant to dip in the Jordan river seven times

6.  Many Elisha warns the king of Israel to avoid a certain place because the army of Arameans were there -- The frustrated Arameans discover that Elisha is warning the king of Israel -- The Aramean army, by night, surrounded the town of Dothan where Elisha was -- Elisha prays that God will strike the Arameans with blindness -- Elisha's prayer is answered; he then led the army to Samaria -- Elisha then prayed that God would restore their sight and they discovered they were at the mercy of Israel's army -- The king of Israel, at Elisha's instruction. spares the army and feeds them instead -- So the bands from Aram stopped raiding Israel's land -- However, later Ben-Hadad, king of Aram took his whole army and beseiged Samaria causing a great famine in the city -- The king of Israel blamed Elisha for the situation, and decided to kill Elisha  --
7.  Elisha predicts that the next day there will be plenty of food, but the king of Israel doen't believe it -- Elisha tells him that the king will see it, but not eat any of it -- The siege is lifted when the Lord causes the Aramean army hear the sound of chariots, horses and a great army -- The Aramean army flees the perceived threat -- The empty camp is discovered by two lepers -- After plundering a couple of tents, they decide they should tell the city that the Arameans are gone -- The king sends some men to check the situation, who find the report is true -- The people rush out of the city to get food and plunder, and in the process trample the king in the gateway and he dies
8,  Elisha warns the Shunammite woman to go with her family to wherever they can find to live during the seven-year famine that was about to begin -- They go to the land of the Philistines -- After the seven years, she returns and the king returns all her land, as well as the income she would have earned from the land over the seven years she was gone -- Hazael murders Ben-Hadad and becomes king of Aram -- Jehoram, son of Jehosaphat, becomes king and reigned 8 years -- Ahaziah, son of Jehoram, becomes king and reigns for 1 year
9.  Jehu is anointed king of Israel -- Joram was at Jezreel because he had been wounded in battle against Hazael, king of Aram and Ahaziah, king of Judah had gone to visit him -- Jehu and his troops hurry to Jezreel -- Jehu kills both kings -- Jezebel is thrown out of window to her death and the prophecy against her comes to pass
10.  Ahab's entire family is killed as had been foretold by Elijah -- Jehu kills the priest of Baal and destroyed the worship of Baal in Israel, but did not turn away from worshiping the calves at Bethel and Dan -- The Lord begins to reduce the size of Israel, and Hazael begins to overpower the Israelites
11.  After Ahaziah's death, Athaliah, his mother, begins to destroy the whole royal family -- Jehosheba, sister of Ahaziah, took Joah, Ahaziah's son, and hid him and his nurse away to save his life -- Joash was hidden with his nurse in the temple for 6 years, while Athaliah cruelly ruled Judah -- In the seventh year, Jehoiada, the priest called together the armed troops of Judah -- Athaliah is killed -- Jehoiadah makes a covenant between God and the king and the army that they would be the Lord's people -- Joash is made king of Judah at age 7 years
12.  Joash reigns for 40 years -- Joash repairs the temple of the Lord -- Hazael, king of Aram, captures Gath, and then turns toward Jerusalem -- Joash gives all the sacred objects dedicated by his fathers, and those he had dedicated; and all the gold in the treasuries of the temple and in the royal palace to Hazael who then withdraws from Jerusalem -- Joash assassinated by his officials -- Amaziah, son of Joash becomes king of Judah
13.  In the 23rd year of Joash's reign in Judah, Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, becomes king of Israel and reigns 17 years -- Hazael continues to severely oppress Israel, so Jehoahaz seeks the Lord's favor and are delivered -- Jehoash, son of Jehoahaz, becomes king of Israel and reigns 16 years; he also does evil -- At the death of Jehoash, Jeroboam succeeded him as king of Israel -- While Elisha was on his deathbed, Jehoash went to see him -- Elisha told him to get a bow and some arrows, then shoot an arrow from an east window -- Jehoash was then instructed to strike the ground with the arrows, which he did three times -- Elisha told the king he should have struck the ground 5 or 6 times -- After Elisha died and had been buried, a dead man was hastily put into Elisha's tomb as Moabite raiders came; the dead man came to life when his body touched Elisha's bones
14.  Amaziah, son of Joash, begins to rule Judah and reigns 29 years -- He executes the officials who had assassinated his father -- Some time later, Amaziah challenges Jehoash, king of Israel to come meet him --Jehoash refuses, and advises Amaziah to stay at home -- Amaziah refuses, so the two armies meet in battle, and Jehoash prevails -- Jehoash goes to Jerusalem, breaks down a portion of the wall and takes took all the gold and silver articles in the temple and in the palace -- When Jehoash dies, his son Jeroboam succeeds him -- Amaziah lives for 15 years after Jeroboam becomes king of Israel -- Amaziah is killed as a result of a conspiracy -- Azariah, son of Amaziah, becomes king of Judah -- Jeroboam ruled over Israel 41 years and did evil -- when Jerobaom dies, Zechariah, his son, becomes king of Israel
15,  Azariah reigns over Judah 52 years and did what was right in the sight of the Lord -- Azariah was afflicted with leprosy until he died, so has to live in a separate house and his son, Jotham, has charge of the palace, governing the land -- At Azariah's death, Jotham becomes king -- Zechariah reigns in Samaria only 6 months -- Shallum assassinates Zecariah, and succeeds him as king; he reigns for 1 month -- Menahem kills Shallum and succeeds him as king and reigns 10 years -- Pekahiah becomes king of Israel at his father, Menahem's death, and reigns for 2 years -- Pekahiah's chief official, Pekah, forms a conspiracy and assassinates the king
-- Pekah becomes king of Israel and his evil reign lasts 20 years -- during his reign, Tiglath-Pileser, king of Assyria captures part of Israel --  Hoshea kills Pekah and succeeds him as king of Israel -- In the 2nd year of Pekah, Jotham, son of Uzziah (Azariah), becomes king of Judah and reigns 25 years; he does right in the eyes of the Lord -- Ahaz, son of Jotham, becomes king of Judah
16.  Ahaz, son of Jotham reigns 16 years and did evil in the eyes of the Lord; followed the ways of Israel and even offered his son as a sacrifice -- Ahaz appeals to Tiglath-Pileser, king of Assyria, to come defend him against the kings of Aram and of Israel -- Ahaz made a detailed sketch of an altar in Damascus, instructing Uriah. the priest to make a new altar like it and place it in the temple beside the altar of the Lord -- Ahaz then instructed the priest to perform the burnt offerings on the new altar, instead of on the altar of the Lord in the temple -- When Ahaz died, Hezekiah his son succeeds him as king
17.  Hoshea becomes king of Israel in the 12th year of Ahaz, king of Judah; he reigns for 9 years and does evil in the eyes of the Lord -- Hoshea rebels against Assyria by withholding tribute and seeking help from Egypt -- Assyria lays seige to Samaria -- Israel defeated by the Assyrians and deported the Israelites -- This took place because the Israelites had sinned against God by worshiping other gods and following the practices of the other nations -- The Assyrians settle in the towns of Samaria
18.  Hezekiah becomes king of Judah in the 3rd year of Hoshea, king of Israel -- He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and reigned for 29 years -- He followed the Lord, and was successful in whatever he undertook -- In the 14th year of Hezekiah's reign, the Assyrians attack the fortified cities Judah and capture them -- Hezekiah depleted the treasuries of Judah to try to appease the Assyrians, but Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians, leads the Assyrians to Jerusalem and has the field commander publicly taunt Hezekiah and the people
19.  Hezekiah, wearing sackcloth, goes to the temple of the Lord; He sends representatives to Isaiah, the prophet, asking that he will pray for the remnant that still survives -- Isaiah tells the Hezekiah's officials to tell the king not to be afraid; God will put a spirit into Sennacherib that when he hears a certain report, he will lead the army away from Jerusalem -- Events go just as Isaiah says, but Sennacherib sends a letter to Hezekiah to undermine his faith in God -- Hezekiah takes the letter to the temple of the Lord, spreads it out and prays to the Lord -- Isaiah prophecies Sennacherib's fall before he can return to Jerusalem -- The angel of the Lord goes through the camp of the Assyrians and kills 185,000 men in the camp -- The next morning, discovering all the dead bodies, Sennacherib led his army back to Ninevah and stays there -- Later, while Sennacherib was worshiping his god, Nisroch, two of his sons kill him and escape -- Another son, Esarhaddon, succeeds him as king
20.  Hezekiah becomes ill to the point of death -- Isaiah comes and tells him that Lord says that he will die -- Hezekiah prays to the Lord and weeps bitterly -- Before Isaiah leaves the courtyard, the Lord tells him to return to Hezekiah -- The Lord had heard Hezekiah's prayer; Isaiah was to tell him that he would recover in 3 days and live for 15 more years, and that the Lord would defend him and the city from the Assyrians -- Hezekiah asks Isaiah how he would know that the Lord would do as He promised -- Isaiah asks if Hezekiah wants the shadow go forward or backward ten steps on the stairway; Hezekiah chooses to have the shadow go back ten steps and the Lord gives him that sign -- Merodach-Baladen, king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift because of Hezekiah's recovery -- Hezekiah receives the messengers and shows them everything in his storehouses, his palace and in all his kingdom -- Isaiah asks him where the men were from and what he had showed them -- At Hezekiah's reply that he'd shown them everything, Isaiah gave him the word from the Lord that everything he had would someday be carried off to Babylon, including some of his own descendants, but that it wouldn't happen during his lifetime -- When Hezekiah dies, Manasseh, his son, becomes king of Judah
21.  Manaaseh reigned in Jerusalem 55 years; he did evil in the eyes of the Lord -- He restored the worship of false gods which his father had destroyed; he even set the idols and articles of worship of the false gods in the temple of the Lord, and sacrificed his son in the fire and shed much innocent blood -- God, through the prophets foretold the downfall of Jerusalem and Judah which was to come -- Manaaseh died and his son, Amon, becomes king; he also did evil in the eyes of the Lord during his 2 year reign in Judah -- Amon's officials conspired against him and assassinated him; then the people of the land killed all who had plotted against Amon and made his son, Josiah, became king of Judah
22.  Josiah was 8 years old when he became king and he reigned in Jerusalem 31 years -- He did right in the eyes of the Lord -- In the 18th year of Josiah's reign, he ordered that the temple of the Lord be repaired -- Hilkiah, the high priest found the Book of the Law in the temple and gave it to Shaphan, the secretary -- After reading it, he took it to the king and read it to him -- Josiah, tore his robes and sent several officials to inquire of the Lord about what was written in book -- They went to Huldah, the prophetess, who lived in Jerusalem -- She told them that the Lord was going to bring disaster of that place and its people because they had worshiped other gods and made idols to them; but she also gave the Lord's message to the king, that because he was responsive and humbled himself before the Lord when he heard what the book had said, torn his robe and wept, that Josiah would not see the disaster, but would be buried before it happened
23.  Josiah calls all the people together and has the Book of the Law read to them -- Josiah renews the convenant to follow the Lord and obey all His commands, regulations and decrees; all the people pledge themselves to do the same -- Josiah ordered the priests to remove all the pagan articles of worship and had them burned; he did away with all the pagan priests and cleansed the land of worship of false gods -- The king ordered all the people to celebrate the Passover; While Josiah was king, Pharoah Neco, king of Egypt joined forces with the Assyrians; Josiah was killed in battle with Neco at Megiddo -- Jehoahaz, son of Josiah became king of Judah and reigned 3 months; he did evil in the eyes of the Lord -- Pharaoh Neco put him in chains and made Eliakim, son of Josiah, king instead -- Neco changed Eliakim's name to Jehoiakim -- Neco took Jehoahaz to Egypt where Jehoahaz died -- Jehoiakim paid Neco the gold and silver demanded -- Jehoiakim reigned 11 years and did evil in God's sight
24.  During Jehoiakim's reign, Nebuchadnezzar invaded the land and Jehoiakim became his vassel -- After three years, Jehoiakim rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar.  The the Lord sent Babylonian, Aramean, Moabite and Ammonite raiders against him to destroy Judah -- When Jehoiakim, his son, Jehoiachin, became king -- He reigned in Jerusalem 3 months and did evil in God's sight -- Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, laid seige to Jerusalem -- Nebuchadnezzar defeated Jehoiachin and made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin's uncle, king in his place; Matteniah was renamed Zedekiah -- Zedekiah reigned 11 years and did evil in the eyes of the Lord
25.  Zedekiah rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar -- In Zedekiah's 9th year, Nebuchandnezzar led his army against Zedekiah, and laid siege against Jerusalem for 2 years -- Jerusalem was totally destroyed and all the leaders killed or deported to Babylon -- Thus Judah went into captivity in Babylon -- Jehoiachin, after 37 years of captivity, was released from prison
