Chapter Summary


1.  Hannah's fervent prayer for a child -- The birth of Samuel -- Hannah dedicates Samuel to the Lord by giving him to Eli, the priest, so Samuel could serve the Lord
2.  Hannah's prayer -- Eli's wicked sons -- A prophecy against the house of Eli
3.  God calls Samuel at night, telling him that the prophecy against Eli's house is about to come to pass -- Eli insists that Samuel tell him everything God said
4.  The Philistines fight against Israel and capture the Ark of the Lord -- Eli's two sons killed in battle -- Death of Eli
5.  The Ark of God taken to the Philistine city of Ashdod -- After the idol of their god, Dagon falls on its face before the Ark, the people, in fear, take the Ark to the cities of Gath, and then to Ekron
6.  So much disaster and disease occured among the Philistines, they sent the Ark of God back to the Israelites -- The Ark put on a cart drawn by two cows -- With no driver, the cows went straight to Beth Shemesh, a town of the Israelites -- The Levites used the wood of the cart and the two cows to offer a burnt offering -- Several men were struck down by the Lord for looking into the Ark of God
7.  The Ark of God taken to the house of Abinadab in Kiriath Jearim -- Samuel calls the Israelites to repentance -- Samuel leads Israel as judge -- Philistines subdued at Mizpah
8.  Israel asks for a king -- Samuel seeks guidance from God -- God told Samuel to do as the people asked, but to warn them of what that would mean
9.  Saul seeks his father's lost donkeys -- Being unsuccessful, Saul's servant suggested they ask the man of God for help -- God had told Samuel of Saul's arrival, and that Saul was to be the one anointed as leader of the Israelites -- Saul and Samuel meet
10.  Samuel anoints Saul and tells him of several things that will happen as he goes on his way -- Saul is made king
11.  Saul rescues the city of Jabesh -- Saul confirmed as king
12.  Samuel's farewell speech -- Samuel calls the Israelites to repentance, encourages them to follow the Lord and prays for them
13.  The Philistines assembled to fight against Israel -- Samuel rebukes Saul because he offered the burnt offering instead of waiting for the full seven days as Samuel had instructed -- Saul told that his kingdom would not endure, but another man would be chosen -- In all of Israel, no one except Saul and his son, Jonathan had
 spears or swords to fight with
14.  Jonathan and his armor bearer attack the Philistines -- Israel then routs the enemy -- Saul forbids eating anything until evening, but Jonathan wasn't there to hear the command -- Jonathan eats some honey -- Jonathan spared the penalty of death -- Saul's family
15.  The Lord rejects Saul as king for his disobedience regarding the total destruction of the Amalekites as God had directed
16,  Samuel anoints David as king -- David plays his harp for Saul, as well as as being Saul's armor bearer
17,  David defeats Goliath with his slingshot as empowered by the Lord -- The Philistines became frightened and ran -- The Israelites pursued them and killed many of them
18.  David and Jonathan become friends -- Saul becomes jealous of David's growing popularity because of his successes in battles against the Philistines
19.  Saul tries to kill David -- Michal, David's wife, warns him of her father, Saul's, continued pursuit -- David escapes
20.  David and Jonathan make a covenant -- Jonathan agees to find out if his father still intends to kill David -- Jonathan warns David by shooting his arrows as a signal -- Jonathan and David bid one another goodby
21.  David goes to Ahimelech, the priest, at Nob -- David is given bread and the sword of Goliath -- David flees to Gath and pretends to be insane to preserve his life from the Philistines
22.  David at the cave of Adullam gathers about 400 men -- He then goes to MIzpah to arrange a safe place for his parents -- Saul kills all the priests of Nob (except Abiathar) for assisting David -- Abiathar joins David's band
23.  David and his men save the town of Keilah from the Philistine's attack -- Saul pursues David -- David flees to the Desert of Ziph -- David betrayed by the Ziphites and Saul continues the pursuit as David flees to the Desert of Maon -- The Philistine's raiding the land of Israel draws Saul away from David -- David goes to En Gedi
24.  David spares Saul's life when Saul comes to En Gedi after him -- David confronts Saul -- Saul returns home, while David and his men go up to the stronghold
25.  Nabal, a surly and mean man, refuses to give David and his men any provisions, even though they had done Nabal no harm -- Meaning to seek revenge, David and his men headed back to Nabal -- Abigail listens to the servant who told her what had happened -- She quickly gathers provisions, meets David and his men on the road and averts David shedding blood in revenge
26,  David again spares Saul's life when he takes the spear and water jug from near Saul's head while he slept -- David calls from the hillside and shows the spear and jug -- Saul returns home, and David goes on his way
27,  David and his men go to the land of the Philistines to avoid Saul -- David gains the trust of the king of Gath -- David receives the town of Ziklag as a town for him and his men to live in
28.  Saul visits the witch of Endor
29.  When the Philistines were on the way to fight the Israelite, David and his men marched with them -- Though Achish trusted David, the other Philistine commanders didn't, so David and his men were ordered to return to Ziklag
30.  David and his men found Ziklag burned and their wives and children taken captive -- David inquired of the Lord about pursuing the Amalikites, and was told to go after them -- David recovered everything, as well as the plunder the Amalekites had taken from the land of the Philistines and from Judah
31.  Saul takes his own life rather than being captured by the enemy in battle -- Saul and his three sons die on Mount Gilboa
